One of the drawbacks to diagonal parking is that pedestrians have to ‘creep out’ on the street to check for oncoming traffic before crossing. It’s nerve racking on Ocean Ave in the Summer season crossing to the west. If it’s not cars, it’s bikes zooming by.
It’s especially bad when large SUV’s and vans are allowed to park by crossings.
In Maine, the pedestrians always have the right of way and over-sized vehicles are forbidden near crosswalks.
Editor’s note: At least a pedestrian can peek around the diagonal obstruction, but it is worse for a driver who wants to pull out onto Main and finds his vision totally obstructed. by large diagonally parked vehicles. That is an extremely dangerous scenario, and all but tiny vehicles should be allowed to park at those spaces near the intersection, or just eliminate those spaces. OG doesn’t need more spaces, it needs less cars and less parking nonsense such as condos approved without parking.
And, don’t forget that the law is most absolute for pedestrians crossing at “marked crosswalks” but many crosswalks in the Grove are not marked. Nevertheless, a pedestrian crossing at an unmarked crosswalk still has the right of way when confronting a vehicle on Main Avenue, or any intersection throughout the town. After all, only Main Avenue has those special signs (see photo above) but they are not even found at all intersections on Maine. I think Broadway may have some.
If a pedestrian is crossing a roadway not at an intersection, the pedestrian must yield the right of way to the vehicle.
