Growing up in Rutherford, a leafy small Bergen County college town, the high school art classes would decorate the windows for certain times of the year. It was fun to walk on Park Avenue and watch our classmates make art for all to see. Towns with character know who they are and arrange their public events to suit their residents, not strangers–ie tourists.
They also celebrated Rutherford Day which had a parade that included all the local groups and kids. The whole town turned out. My class had a reunion on that day, and we photographed some of the soccer players. (below)
It would be great if Ocean Grove could find its own identity amongst the flea markets, craft shows, British car shows, chocolate weekends, religious festivals, 5K runs, Beach Boy concerts, etc. Those things are fine to a point, but they drown out the Ocean Grove theme and congest the town. Where are the “Citizens for Historic Ocean Grove?”
