Hi Paul:
Greetings from Manhattan. Sometimes, when I am performing the simplest act, all the elements of a poem come together, without any effort on my part, as if I were being handed an anonymous gift. Here is “Evening Coffee,” from my 2008 poetry collection, Father of Water.
Best wishes,
Charles Pierre
“Evening Coffee”
By Charles Pierre
When I lift this cup to my lips,
the black liquid catches a quick
reflection of the cold night sky,
where some stars and a sliver
of moon gather and glide,
the slick surface shimmering
with the upward motion
of my hand: stars and moon
mixing like sugar and cream,
the light sweetened drink
streaming in hot waves
over my teeth and tongue,
glowing in the dark
space of my throat.
