From Grover 666: “Some people are morally handicapped: If they don’t have a phony handicapped sticker they reserve their own parking spot by putting an orange cone, a garbage can, or a chair on the street in front of their house.”
Editor’s note: This comment was originally posted in relation to non-handicapped individuals parking in handicapped spaces. But, three years ago, there was a related Blogfinger discussion on this subject as it pertains to holding regular spaces in the Grove. It is especially a problem after a snowstorm.

I have no remorse about trying to save somewhere to park, though I don’t cone or use garbage cans. The summer renters and part time residents have no problem having 7 cars for a 2 bedroom house. When I work 14 hours I am not happy about leaving my car at the hospital and paying for a cab home, let alone watching my 91 year old neighbor who leaves to visit his wife at Manor by the Sea and ends up walking home with his walker. As a native born Grover, I don’t expect a space in front of my house, but the cars and occupancy now associated with summer rentals have gotten out of control.
The parking is a serious issue. We’ll be coming in about a week. After we unload the car, I try to stash it somewhere convenient, but out of the way–we stay at the Shawmont, and parking near there is really difficult. I don’t mind walking to get the car, but my mother is 92 and she cannot. Of course, I could put up the handicapped sign and leave it in place day after day, but that doesn’t seem fair.
I wish there were a secured place that it could be left–where I wouldn’t worry about vandalism if I leave it for a couple of days.
Cone Zone: This is an internet photo to illustrate the subject.
What street was that photo taken from…doesn’t look like OG.
When I purchased my home a few years back, I blocked off about 5 parking spaces with cones – so I would be able to fit a box truck to move me in. Neptune Police suggested this to me. Perhaps, these folks are moving in or are in the process of getting approved for a handicapped space?
The worst was my neighbor and her family this weekend. They had 7 cars that they played ‘the car game’ all weekend – when one pulled out, they would move the other cars to fill the space it vacated, but not enough for another car to fit. When the other car returned, they elimated the space to allow it to park. All freaking weekend and we are on the 2nd beach block in the north end. Several of these cars never went anywhere. It would be have been far more neighborly to stash 2-3 of these vehicles down by the tennis court.
What I find more offensive is when people stand in a spot waiting for a friend to get there to park …
