Around town with Jean: About 15 volunteers began work this morning under the supervision of Bill Bailey, Director of Operations for the Camp Meeting. I guess this is as close as Bill will get to surgical operations.
Bill oriented his crew, and then they began an assembly line sort of procedure where one person made a hole with a pole wherever an orange flag appeared. The hole went down about 4 inches, and then a dune grass plug was inserted by another person, about 2 inches into the hole. A third person pushed the sand back in place. Henry Ford would have admired the procedure.
10,000 plugs will be implanted over the next few weeks. Lucky that grass does not have to be combed or mowed.
Jean said that there was a sense of accomplishment among the workers because they all understand the importance of the dunes in protecting Ocean Grove. Working by hand with others, teamwork, is also the basis of some satisfaction. The job utilized no machinery, computers, robots, trucks, or oppressed laborers. It was also a fine day to be on the beach. The shift went from 9-12, and the proceedings will be repeated tomorrow.
