“Paul:
“This postcard is from World War I and specifically postmarked May 1918 “to the folks at home” in Ocean Grove NJ as shown on this post card. Fitting for the day to remember when a war was a war.
“Maybe someday if we ever learn to get along with one another we could get down to the real business of being human and work for the betterment of one another.

May 26, 2014 Memorial Day in Ocean Grove.
Editor’s note: In today’s parade there were no WWI vets, but there were veterans. ( see below)
And don’t forget to walk or bike over to the top of Broadway and visit the war memorials there. Ocean Grovers ought to do that at least once per year to read the names of Grovers who served.
And here’s a historical tidbit: After the founding of Ocean Grove, many Union veterans came here to vacation and be with their comrades. President Grant was inaugurated the same year (1869) that Ocean Grove was founded. He had a summer home in Long Branch and he often visited the Grove.
In 1875 there was a big celebration for Independence Day in OG and Pres. Grant participated. That day a new flag was raised at the foot of Ocean Pathway, and Joseph H. Thornley, Esq. of Philadelphia read the Declaration of Independence, and Dr. E.H. Stokes, the CMA President, delivered “a patriotic oration.”
Later the President had dinner with the officers of the OG Camp Meeting Association. Finally, that night, there was a large reception held for the President in the Great Auditorium. —(source The Story of Ocean Grove, 1869-1919 by Morris S Daniels. —–PG
