The Arlington House (formerly the Pitman House) in Ocean Grove, New Jersey

It’s hard to envision where in Ocean Grove this building might have stood from this picture, but a history book of OG says that the Arlington stood on Auditorium Square which, even today, is a large park-like setting.  One thing is sure, there were no parking problems then; the stables were on the west side of town. They probably had an ordinance that said, “Pick up after your horse.”

I can’t remember who told me about the old Arlington Hotel (it was years ago!), but since the postcard says “formerly Pitman House,” and the hotel and present apartment complex are on Pitman Ave, I still believe that may be the location of the building in the postcard. Anyone out there have any old pictures of the original building?

The Arlington Hotel was located where the Arlington Court is now located. I can remember the old Hotel.

Those grounds used to be a lumber yard back in those “founders” days. Sold to Mr. Howland who took what was left of the lumber yard building converting it into the first Arlington. Then when business got really touristy, he extended it to the end of the block, establishing a new Arlington on the entire block with the front entrance facing across the street into what is now Auditorium Park; you know where all those maple’s are planted.

The maple’s were planted to honor the founders of the Grove. For me, a tomato plant would of been just fine. You would not have had the squirrel population. There was no “wifi” back then but they did have “voice tubes” throughout the hotel. The good old days………..

Based on those 3 houses at the upper right corner, this looks like Founders Park.

It looks like the ocean is off in the distance which leads one to think it stands where the Youth Temple is these days. The perspective seems a bit off. The date also suggests that the 1869 version of the Auditorium would be to the left out of frame.

    Hi Paul,
I believe that Hotel stood where the present Arlington Apartments are located.
If the info I was given is correct, the old hotel was unfortunately demolished in the late fifties or early sixties and the apartment complex was built in its place
