What’s With the H20 at the Old North End? Rich Wants to Know.

Postcard of the North End Hotel in Ocean Grove, 1951,  submitted by Rich Amole, Blogfinger historian

Paul:

It seems that the North End Hotel Pool photo has awakened almost 10 responses. Let me throw a postcard   (being sold on ebay) made from a painting  done in 1951 of the Hotel showing a bit of water bordering the lower rooms of the hotel.  Anyone want to jump in on this and tell us   where or what that water is doing there?

Rich

And from what I hear from old-timers, the tunnel is still there. Given the uncertainty of ground support and post-Sandy environmental reports maybe the Camp Meeting Association should consider the dog park for the North End.

Yes Devo, the guests parked on the street. Rather the bell hops parked the cars for the guests, wherever they could find a place. there was spots on the street, by the hotel, and they used them first before using the streets.

It’s a watercolor from a reference photo or easel.

That response by Jan makes better sense in spite of it’s resembling water. The way that image is portrayed anyone strolling downs the boards that felt the urge to go for a dip could just take a step off and voila, you’re wet.

It’s not water. That area was painted a bright shade of blue and that’s what looks like water. Jan Reece

How did the parking work for such a large hotel? I do not see where the parking lot would be. Did all those guests just part on the streets?

There was no water there. It was grass. I think the building to the left was the laundry for the hotel. Behind that were the lockers for the North End bathing beach. You couldn’t just walk onto the beach. You needed to access the lockers to get to the pool or the tunnel that took you to the beach.
