Christmas Palm: Fort Myers, Florida

November 30, 2012 by Blogfinger

The Christmas Palm is also known as Adonidia merrillii  (yes, three of the last 5 letters are eyes — i.e. i’s).  It grows native only in the Phillipines (another word with three eyes), but it is transplanted in South Florida. Its bright scarlet fruits are obviously why it is called the Christmas Palm. It is one Christmas icon that is not found in New Jersey, along with Bethlehem itself. At least, in the Philippines, they don’t call it a “holiday palm.”

Just for the record, when I was a kid, they called me “four eyes” and then, when I got glasses, they called me “six eyes.”    — Paul
