Justin Vernon of Bon Iver receives Grammy from Tony Bennett
Bon Iver defies stereotyping. Their sound varies from song to song, but they seem to favor choral type music that could be performed by many voices or just a few. They were founded in 2007 by Justin Vernon, a singer songwriter who wanted to do something different. The name comes from the French “bon hiver” which means “have a good winter.”
Their popularity exploded in the last couple of years. Yet, judging from their music, their selection probably came as a surprise to many music fans. They also received a Grammy for the best alternative music album called “Bon Iver.”
Justin Vernon had been vocal in his complaints about the awards. He’s all about the music and he doesn’t like the glitz. After the ceremony, he said, “Getting an award for music? Like I said in the speech, I was uncomfortable.” —PG
