We received a report today from Blogfinger photographer Ted Aanensen that a house at 65 Abbott Avenue was being torn down. We looked into the matter and found out that the home was built in the 1950’s and had no historical significance. It was in poor condition according to Jason Urig, the general manager at Sawbucks Contracting in Ocean Grove. He said that the foundation had been damaged by the roots of a “huge” tree in the backyard and that the building had “no redeeming qualities.” Mr.Urig tells us that the tree must be removed.
Sawbucks is doing the demolition and the replacement home. They are well known in the Grove and were the contractors for one of the 2011 Beersheba Award winners: 3 Surf Avenue.
The new owners are Ed Nodelman and Robbin Millering. Their architect is Mark Pavliv of Ocean Grove. Mr. Urig tells us that Mr. Pavliv has designed a “beautiful rebuild” in the Victorian style. The new building will be 2 1/2 stories high. Mr. Pavliv specializes in historic restorations and he has won awards as AIA New Jersey and Jersey Shore Architect of the Year.
Note that all demolitions in town must be approved by the HPC and that the new design must also pass muster with them. It appears that this demolition is a win-win for the town and the owners.
Glad to see this house go. Hopefully more of the ugly, non-conforming, non-Victorian homes in town will be similarly replaced.
