Columbus discovered this place in 1493. Supposedly he wasn’t impressed, and pirates took over. But now cruise ships bring tourists wearing Bermuda shorts and lots of jewelry.
Yet, there are moments like the above to be found if you know where to look. — –PG
The theme of this show at the National Portrait Gallery is “American Cool.” So, among the portraits are Debbie Harry, Jimi Hendrix, and Miles Davis. The exhibit will be shown until September 7, so if you are planning to be in D.C., this should be fun.
Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) was from Floral Park, NY. He usually worked in black and white, and his work was often controversial. He specialized in celebrity portraits, nudes, homoerotic themes and flowers. He was a wonderful and original photographer whose images were usually very powerful. We posted one of his flower images on Blogfinger:

Laurie has just completed her winter garden greenhouse. When you walk inside on a cold morning, the warm, moist air hits you, fogging your glasses and my camera lens. The ecology of this greenhouse effect is due to solar radiation entering through the plastic and then heat is trapped inside and absorbed by plants and soil. The plants themselves give off some heat and oxygen. Condensation by the cold air outside causes the wetness and even dripping from above noted in the greenhouse.
Tara proudly showed us the now-ready-to-pick crop consisting of collard greens, iceberg/red-leaf/ romaine lettuces, arugula, sweet peas and swiss chard. We sampled the arugula, and the taste of the fresh picked leafs was intense, with strong notes of mustard. It’s as if the arugula flavor had been enhanced by salad dressing.
The experience of eating fresh picked greens is unique, and you all should try it. The idea is that you can pick your own “winter mix” for a salad to be consumed that day. The pea crop is wonderfully sweet, but it is small, so you only buy a few pods as a garnish.
Coming attractions include kale and carrots. Laurie also still has some Jersey beefsteak tomatoes.
Tomorrow, Sunday, November 10, there will be an arts and crafts show at the market. The market will be open year-round, and there will be monthly special events. Call 732 988 1600 for more info.
