Scene: The pastry display case at Delicious Orchards in Colt’s Neck. A woman, about age 40, arrives at the counter before me. Behind the counter are two older women; one walks over to wait on the customer.
Customer: Do you have crumb cakes?
Sales lady: We do; they’re very popular.
Customer: Do you have the kind with more cake than crumbs?
Sales lady raises her eyebrows and then reaches way down behind the counter. She emerges with a tray of crumb cakes: “How is this one?”
Customer: That’s great! My family loves more cake than crumbs.
Me to the customer: That’s amazing that you had a choice of cake or crumbs.
Customer to me: Yes! That’s what America’s about, isn’t it?
Me: Uh….Sometimes.
