Pictured is one of the four stone jetties that were constructed in Ocean Grove from 1949 to 1960. These and their wooden predecessors were supposed to halt the northward drift of sand to Sandy Hook.
Today, it is recognized that jetties do not preserve beaches, but merely capture sand on one side while hastening beach erosion on the other side. Some environmental groups have urged the cutting of jetties. North Carolina, South Carolina, Maine, and Rhode Island now prohibit the construction of jetties.
