From Miss Jean: “Today I joined the tai chi students who attended the class Pegi Constantino is offering at the Ocean Grove Woman’s Club.
It’s a series of non-strenuous positions and movements designed to stretch your muscles and center you.
“This age old Chinese form of exercise actually does relax you.”
Editor’s note: If you hold a position too long, you may get tai itchy and a craving for egg rolls.
Do you recall the Chinese restaurant syndrome? You get this after eating Chinese food. The symptoms were first described in the 1960’s, and for awhile the syndrome was making a big splash in the medical journals. It is usually mild consisting of flushing (this does not refer to Flushing, Long Island where there are hundreds of Asian restaurants,) headache, sweats, numbness, chest discomfort and palpitations. Occasionally the episodes can be severe and mimic a serious allergic reaction. The condition has been attributed to MSG food flavoring, but that connection is not certain. Many Chinese restaurants have eliminated MSG from their ingredients.
Perhaps Miss Pegi will take her crew to the best Chinese restaurant in the area on the occasion of the year of the rooster. How about some suggestions from our readers as to which is best (send an email to Blogfinger@verizon.net or comment below.)
Or Miss Pegi, how about going to your farm and getting a rooster for the club members to roast. But if someone calls you and says “duck,” don’t get under the table.
JIMMY BUFFETT. This is a live performance, and you can tell it wasn’t recorded in an OG establishment:
TEMPLE Gourmet Chinese Restaurant in Red Bank at 91 Broad Street is owned by the son of the Kuo’s who own the Peking Pavilion in Manalapan. Highly recommended.
We enjoy Peking Pavilion located at 110 Rte 33 in Manalapan, a bit pricey but quite good with a very nice atmosphere. It’s located not far from Freehold Raceway Mall.
The Great Wall in Neptune City has the best takeout around. It’s takeout only. Have been there and least 25 times and the food is always fresh and well prepared. We had given up on Chinese takeout until friends recommended the Great Wall.
It is located in the Stop and Shop center, in a small group of stores, behind KFC.
A shoutout to Jean Bredin for the sharing the above information on tai chi. Who knew such an art existed in our little hamlet.
