Looks like the Army Corps is going to need to replenish the beach — our dunes are gone and it looked to me today like 15′ of beach is gone, judging relative to the jetties. The pier should be rebuilt with deeply driven 24″ piles like they use in many other shore towns for key piers (not the narrow diameter piles that were there). Let’s get going with the remediation. I’m in should they need some volunteer work. This is our opportunity to make OG’s beachfront even nicer for the 2013 season!!

To answer the above ANONYMOUS questiuon , the SHAWMONT HOTEL at 17 Ocean Ave. and Olin St. made it through OK. The staff member e-mailed me that info. However I would imagine exterior grounds, gardens, etc. of all the Ocean Avenue properties need a bit of a makeover with debris, sand removal window & porch cleaning etc.

Thanks so much for posting updated. We summer in OG every year now for 5 years! Peace and love and healing thoughts coming from Texas! We love y’all.

This is so incredibly sad. OG has been my second home since my grandmother had a house on Embury Ave. The fishing pier and house have been there since I was a child. I was just here in October and am so glad to have pictures to remember it by. My heart goes out for all that live there and all the towns up and down the Jersey shore.

Thank you for the pictures. I am sad that our beloved grove took such a hit. But the cross still stands. thanks for the reminder,

Ocean Grove was my second home for about 35 years of my life! Thanks so much, Paul, for posting the photos. I’m glad the damage was not worse. . . but isn’t that surf looking great?

Just wondering if I will encounter any problems driving down on Wednesday from NY. Are there any specific road or street closures?
Thanks for all the updates. Those of us who long for the day when we can be there year round are grateful for your blog.

Thanks for the photos. Brought the grandkids to OG last August and daughter-in-law, her mother and sister the summer before. They, being from the midwest, fell in love with OG. I’m glad they saw and enjoyed it before Sandy arrived. Growing up, my folks stayed at OG every summer for our family 2 week vacation. Finally,my folks were able in their later years to lease one of the tent/cabins. Lots of wonderful memories. I know it will come back, it always has.

Thank you for the pictures and information. Ocean Grove has been a special place to our family for over 4 generations. I am glad to see as bad as things are they could be much worse. I am thankful for the updates. Do you know anything about the Ocean Pride? So glad no one was hurt. The pictures are surreal.

I lived on Broadway, grew up in the Grove. As bad as it looks, I truly expected worse. Praying for all of those suffering in the midst of this.

Thank you for your posts – the only ones I could find! Hope you & your loved ones are safe…mine are in Wall & Neptune – no power, but they are safe. I’m the one who lives in South Florida – hurricane country! Such a weird twist of fate…

Thanks for the incredible pictures and information. Haven’t been to Ocean Grove for years but the awesome memories remain in my family’s heart and soul. My Grandparents (Lauterbach) and Great Aunt (Marx) lived at your very own 113 Mt Herman Way. We are sorry for what was damaged during Hurricane Sandy, but grateful things weren’t worse. May your strong community pull through this stronger than ever!

I second that on the Shawmont Hotel at Ocean and Olin. A photo would be great. Videos would be nice too. Keep the pictures coming ! Stay safe Groover’s. The fishing shack is gone……Did Ralph survive?

This is so hard to look at. Thank goodness it looks like no one hurt. Does anyone know how much damage the Shawmont Hotel sustained?
