It Begins. Blogfinger Storm Coverage

October 28, 2012 by Blogfinger

“Don’t know why there’s no sun up in the sky — stormy weather.” (Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler, 1933.)

Paul Goldfinger video

Blogfinger will be maintaining three storm related posts. The first, News, will focus on the weather and its effects. We know that you can find information about the storm all over the media, but we will concentrate on Ocean Grove.

The second, Photo and Video, is a running gallery of images that our photographers provide plus photos submitted by our readers. We encourage your participation. Just send us jpgs to Blogfinger@verizon.net. The best ones will be chosen. We like quality not quantity, so take your best shot and submit it.

The third, Comments by Grovers and others in town, will allow you to report on any storm related information. You can tell us about your experiences, about conditions on your block, about where to get supplies, etc. Or you can write a poem, share an anecdote, report on a conversation overheard, or just express your feelings.

If Ocean Grove loses power, we will try to find a way to continue posting, for the benefit of those who are out of town and have functioning computers. If you are in town but without power, try to find us with your smartphones.

The pier was closed off when I got there @ 6pm Sunday. The waves were just hitting the platform of the fishing pier. I would say about 15 ft. and it was still low tide. So I bet the sand barriers are gone by now. I also saw a criuse ship going by heading south out of NYC and I guess Newark Airport was still letting planes land. The planes were coming in from the east to west and as soon as they got to the shoreline they turned north. Flying very low. Amazing!

We realized that the picture was probably not current and we took it down shortly after posting it. It was sent to us by a reliable source who portrayed it as a photo of the current storm.

That picture of the pier has to be from Irene, as there are no railings on the eastern edge. (maybe they are gone, but at 5pm they looked like they were still there)

Belmar might be down because no one is there, mandatory evac for all residents

    It’s intermittent, keep trying.

Also, there was an amazing picture posted of the pier:

I don’t know of any web cams still active in Ocean Grove, but readers away from the Grove may want to peek at the Belmar beach via this web cam:

Your blog told me when I could come back to OG last September and now you will keep me informed as just arrived to FL.
Many thanks for all the noble efforts!

The coverage on this blog is superlative. And the waves are superlative. I see them going right up to the wall of sand OG created at the entrances to the boardwalk. And the biggest surge in on Monday night. They have that dark color you sometimes see in paintings.

Thank you so much. As someone who is 85 miles away at home in PA, it is a good feeling to know someone is there to report on events.

Paul, Charles et al, many thanks for being so diligent in getting out the news and info we OGers need to make it through this, and last year’s storm. Hats off to all you…hopefully they will not fly out of our hands during the coming storm! Again, thanks a million!

Paul, Charles et al — thanks so much! I have been checking your site regularly, as I always do, because you take such good care of delivering the news we Ocean Grovers need regarding our beloved 1 square mile town. Thanks so much!
