In 1898 two hundred and sixty officers and men died when the battleship Maine exploded (unknown cause) and sank in Havana Harbor, Cuba. The harbor at the time was under Spanish control. Spain declared war on the U.S.  It ranks among the worst U.S naval disasters during a time of peace.

Nine months after, a treaty ended the Spanish American War and brought a close to Spanish control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
