Joanne Frangides loves old things, including her two historic homes, one of which is in Ocean Grove. She actually contacted me regarding places to visit in Florida, but while she was at it, she mentioned her passion for recycling and restoring—interests that stem back to her parents’ immigrant experience where frugality was a survival skill.    It made me wonder if these traits might be shared with other Grovers who own historic homes in our town. If you have recycled something that has enhanced your old house, please comment below.

By Joanne Frangides:

“Our primary residence is in Westwood NJ (County of Bergen) and our summer home is in the Grove which we use and enjoy renting to wonderful and interesting people.  I live with my husband and 2 cats .  I have 2 children both of which are out of the nest for the time being.  My daughter is attending college in Boston and my son is a US Marine serving our country and currently stationed in Iwakuni Japan.

“Both of our homes are charming, historic, and a product of our many hours of labor and  love for restoring anything and everything!!  I call myself the “real recycler”–I was recycling before it became in vogue.  I don’t throw anything away because it is old or used.  I look at it and find a way of how it can be reused or restored.  This comes natural to me while others often ask “how did you think of that?  My thought  usually is “how could you not?”.

“Both of my parents are Greek immigrants who came from poor families and basically we had to be economical while I was growing up.  They are financially well off right now and still do not know how not to be economical.  What a gift my parents gave me.

“Anyway, that is just a little insight story of how I probably became a lover and appreciative of old things.”
