We went to Matt’s Market in Belmar where the Jersey beefsteak tomatoes are in their prime. They are small, large and jumbo at $2.00 – $2.50 per pound. And they are amazing.
We also picked up eggplants, pears, Jersey corn, and blackberries. Their stock is huge with trucks showing up all day long with new items.
On the way home we stopped at Del Pontés bakery in Bradley Beach where I got a crusty Italian bread. By then we were craving a tomato sandwich.
So we cut some bread with or without scooping. Be generous with Hellman’s mayo and then begin building your custom sandwich; don’t drool into the lunch.
Slice a tomato. These are a work of art. Add cheese (your choice–Eileen likes brie. I used some sharp cheddar slices from NY State and finished it off with slices of Vidalia (sweet) onion* and some basil leaves from the garden.
These sandwiches are world-class, and the Jersey tomatoes are the centerpiece.
Go to Matts Market by taking Memorial Drive and then south on 35, passing the Belmar Marina. Turn left at the Windmill, and it is about one mile straight ahead on the left.
*Vidalia onions are at the end of their season, but Wegman’s has some nice sweet onions from elsewhere.
Oh, tomatoes are good for prostate glands.
MOLLY MARTIN. “Tomatoes”
For a time, my father worked in Camden near the Campbell Soup factory. He told me that occasionally, trucks piled high with tomato baskets would turn over right in front of the RCA corporate offices. Kids would gather to collect the fall fruit and attempt to sell it to passersby. However, these tomatoes were extra ripe as required by Campbell’s and dripped out the bottoms of the sellers’ bags. RCA was prepared for this emergency and dispatched a crew with fire hoses to clean the street.
