a. Grovers; How big is your can? What is the size of your receptacle? Why doesn’t the dopey Home Groaners Assoc. explain why this is happening?
Do any of you Grovers know why? After all, Blogfinger has no investigative reporters on our staff. Be a citizen reporter and send us some news.
“If you are unsure of the size of your receptacle, place it at the curb as you usually do on your next trash pick-up day, and if the DPW feels your receptacle is too large, they will take your trash but they will put a yellow sticker on it.
“Then going forward, the DPW will no longer pick up trash from any receptacle with a yellow sticker on it. If you have any questions, please reach out to the DPW at 732-775-8797.”
b The new Neptune Police Chief was sworn in on June 1, 2022. Capt. Larry Fisher has been on the Neptune force for many years.
And congratulations and many thanks to retiring Chief James Hunt.
c. Policing in the Grove: The Neptune police presence will soon be increased in the Grove, especially by the ocean front. The NTPD will have OG shifts. Special police will be used, and the NTPD has always used plain clothes officers as needed.
d. OG Town-Wide Yard Sale update:
—We now have 11 Sailors on the good ship Blogfinger.
–If you want to help publicize this event, pick up a flier and stick it onto the front of your house or anywhere else that is legal. Stop at 113 Mt. Hermon Way. Also, if you are a veteran or a relative of one, stop by and pick up a poppy–I bought some from the Jewish War Veterans. FREE for you!
–Your yard sale permit is obtainable from the Neptune Municipal building—-Code/Construction Dept. Tell them you are part of our sale, and the price will be reduced (I can get it for you wholesale) from $10 to $5.00 You can also order a permit from the Neptune Township web site.
—Your permit is good for Saturday 6/18, Sunday 6/19 and Monday 6/20. If you want to have your sale on Sunday, that is OK even though you don’t often see sales on Sunday. Or you can do Saturday and Sunday. Let me know so that I can mention it on our sailors list (found by clicking on the yard sale tab at the top of this page
It’s about time Grovers make things happen on Sundays. If you want to organize a small-town SUNDAY event, like a trio playing on a porch, let me know and I will look into whether a permit is required.
e. There has been talk among OG insiders regarding placing electric car charging stations around town. But that would eliminate some parking spaces.
And there has been ongoing concerns about the number of handicapped spots, especially the kind that only allows one specific car to park. Some say that this practice is unfair, especially if the permittee is here only part time.
f. Song of the week: “If I Were a Bell.” Beverly Kenney
Some municipalities have trucks that can lift up and empty garbage cans mechanically with only the driver as the operator. The cans likely have to be of a designated type and size to work with these systems. Here in NYC, plastic bags are the norm which spares us some of the noise.
Thanks Rich. Maybe the neighbors (us) can learn from your frustrating trashy experiences in Bradley Beach. I can also say that Ocean Grove can learn a lot from your town as to how it runs things including summer events, parking, and places to eat. And you have a train station and garages.
In OG DPW employees must be much stronger than their counterparts in Bradley Beach as there is a 38-gallon limit on trash and recycle containers. OG has a 42-gallon limit. WOW, that’s a significant difference!
Nine years ago when we first moved to BB we observed what were the most common trash and recycling containers and acquired these containers costing us over $200. Shortly after the borough changed this to the max 38-gallon size. In order to equal our usual volume of our trash accumulated, we had to spend $328 for four 32-gallon cans.
Why not get a 38 gallon can? Could I find one? Sure did. I saw only one at $100 each and it was too flimsy. Maybe before it was decided on a size perhaps someone could have found out a minimal easily available size at a moderate cost.
Think it ends there? Oh no, there’s more! Because BB DPW needed more time to “train employees” it was decided to cut weekly recyclables to once every other week except for the couple of summer months when weekly would return.
With OG’s 42-gallon limit maybe the BB DPW new training schedule should include a muscle training program?
To see how people were dealing with this new program I took a walk around just after the new schedule began. On the day of a pickup I saw many overflowing cans. I was also surprised to see how many people use cans without lids; some used other style containers including cardboard containers. Hardly any of these had lids or covers. Appears there is an enforcement issue here.
In my case, I was lucky to keep one of my original cans and took a chance it would be emptied and it was when I had to use it. Talking to others on how they handle this new plan I learned that some people just throw the excess recyclables in their rubbish. Such is progress?
Seems like there should be more of an understanding of residents’ quality of life. One thing I learned well over my many years’ involvement in the various towns I have lived is: “Don’t mess with peoples garbage”!
