Growing up I knew many Broadway scores, but I think my Mom didn’t care for “Brigadoon.” So I first heard “Almost Like Being in Love” when I played in the sax section of the Fairleigh Dickinson U. Jazz Band. Two of my band-mates were true professionals, and one, a pianist, actually wrote an arrangement of this song for us.
I was so impressed and I loved this song. What an idea: “Almost like being in love.” Alan Jay Lerner wrote those lyrics in 1947 for “Brigadoon.” I think I experienced that once or twice in my life.
My advice to young people is don’t settle for “almost.”

Good to hear the late Johnny again. I saw him live in NYC when he was sapped by his final illness. Hartman & Coltrane was one of my favorite albums.
