This story begins in my endodontist’s chair in Ocean, NJ. summer 2019. where I was to undergo a root canal. I was wearing earphones for obvious reasons and I planned to keep my eyes on Dr. Ira Zohn’s eyes looking for any indication of trouble. In the room was his assistant, and there was a lot of technology including 3-D imaging.
The music would keep my attention as much as I could, so I chose “Pink Martini” for their remarkable musicianship and their lively selections. One of their special features is that they perform in a wide variety of languages and they travel all over the world.
Dr. Zohn noticed my earphones and he asked, “What are.you listening to?”
“Pink Martini” I replied.
Dr Zohn’s face lit up when he heard that. “I love that group,” he said. He goes to their live performances whenever they are in the area.
“Did you get tickets for their upcoming Count Basie (Red Bank) concert? I was the first to get mine.”
“No” I said, but when I got home I ordered two for their October 1, 2019 performance in Red Bank.
Dr. Zohn is a friendly, remarkably skilled, and careful endodontist, and my procedure went well.
Fast forward to the Count Basie Theater in October 2019. Eileen and I had seats on the right side about half way up. It is a fine venue, and the concert began with some of their trade-mark arrangements, like the one above. The vocalist was a beautiful woman with a tattoo visible on her bare back.
About mid-way they did a segment where they called some people up on the stage to participate in a fun number where those called to the stage could take part. The first person they chose was a man sitting front row center—it was Dr Zohn, my endodontist.
He was having so much fun on stage, speaking some lines, playing to the crowd, and dancing about with the singers. I don’t know if his choice was staged, but he was thrilled.
So you never know when someone you know might take on a persona that would surprise everybody.
I will send this post to him.
