Photography is not usually allowed in the OR, but because I was a resident there, Eileen’s OB said OK. I gowned and masked and stood in the back of the room with my view as seen in the photo. I stood there transfixed as the head crowned and then popped out. I was paralyzed, waiting for him to be fully born, unable to take a single photo.
Then, suddenly, M. got stuck—shoulder dystocia! I was frozen as the doctors began to discuss emergency measures—i.e. fracturing his clavicle (collar bone) to allow rotation of the shoulder and to free him. (I joke today about his looking around the room and wanting to go back).
But then, the doctor somehow got him out, and as he burst free, I took one photo–the one you see. Then later I got a few more when he was lying in a plastic crib, crying and getting a bit of oxygen via a mask lying on his chest. He was swollen after his arduous journey from one wonderful world to another. —Paul
