For her Thanksgiving table, Eileen chose Alstroemeria for their colors and sustained freshness. This flower has no smell. It is originally from South America, especially Chile and Eastern Brazil. But now it is being bred in the Netherlands and grown in the US.
You can plant them in your garden but they would be annuals. They can be found as perennials from Zone 8 down to Florida (Zone 10.) Ocean Grove is Zone 7.
Years ago, there were few flowers available in December for the home. Eileen’s Mom would often display pussy willows and eucalyptus leaves. Her father worked in New York City and was near enough to the historic famed Flower District that he brought home flowers every Friday for Shabbos (Sabbath).
And today, thanks to the miracle of modern shipping, as with fresh foods, a huge array of flowers can be bought across the country. Eileen purchased these at Wegmans.
