Bonney Read is one of our favorite Asbury restaurants, located on Cookman Avenue–eastern end. They call themselves a “classic chowder house serving American seafood.”
Their food is delicious and fresh. The atmosphere is very appealing with high ceilings and a youthful and eager wait staff. As noted we had lobster rolls. Friends had mussels, Cesar salad with shrimp, and the salmon catch-of-the-day special. The fries and the slaw were very good. There also is a classy bar scene and a nice wine list. I had a pinot noir from Oregon which was excellent at $12.00 for the glass.
On a Tuesday night, the restaurant was uncrowded, and there was plenty of parking right outside. You could eat inside or out. The clientele seemed to be affluent, young, and lively.
On Thursdays after 7 pm they offer a special: Steamed lobster with potato, corn, and drawn butter for $25.00. Check their menu at: www.thebonneyread.com/
Looking around Cookman Avenue on a Tuesday night in August, there were small numbers of people walking around. I couldn’t help but wonder how well the A. Park restaurant destination scene would do in the off-season. However, to be fair, we were early at about 6 pm.
The other issue is that the best restaurants there seem to be acquiring New York prices, but where does the average Joe with a limited budget eat? Any comments on that concern?

Among the great freedoms of America are the freedom to become rich and the freedom to spend your money any way you please.
And then there is the freedom for a restaurateur to charge whatever he wants for his food.
If you think he is charging too much, then go somewhere else.
Absolutely no reason on earth to charge that for a lobster roll. Even Panera makes a great one for half that. Pure greed, typical of every restaurant in Asbury. Fools to pay the prices over there.
And $12 for a glass of wine. I buy a bottle for less and go to a BYOB. Add tax and tip and you have a nice bill at Bonney read.
If that is 1 1/4 lb lobster, I weigh 300 lbs.
Probably 1/2 lb lobster, hot dog roll, fries and cole slaw for $30? Are you kidding!
Editor’s note: They say that the meat from a small (1 1/4 lb) lobster is used for each lobster roll.
