In this instance there is no photo so as not to embarrass the person. But the day is Sunday July 8, 2018–a grid lock beach day, church service and choir festival.
An individual with handicapped parking in front of their house did not use that space, but instead took up a regular space adjacent. Later, when company arrives, the person slips back into the handicap space, and the company takes the saved space.
It’s the “handicap shuffle” and is, at least, unethical and, at worst, may be illegal. (or ought to be.)
It is similar to the game played by people with driveways.
PG: You say and you are correct: “And because no one in OG is willing to find ways to reduce the numbers of cars coming in.”…….
I had seen a mobile electronic sign on wheels parked at the entrance to AVON that said: “TOWN IS FULL. NO PARKING.” What a simple but effective solution. We should press the NTPD to do this. There is one just sitting at Broadway and Rte 71.
Editor’s note: And don’t forget when the Mayor of Belmar shut down his town in the face of a massive tourist day—he said that the Belmar government’s first obligation is to their residents. That’s how it should be here. —-PG
There is no doubt that the congestion/parking mess is getting worse, and the local government doesn’t care. So I don’t begrudge residents for trying to find some small advantages, such as saving a space after shoveling one out after a snow storm.
But this summertime mess is impossible because we can’t get any help to give the residents some advantage.
And because no one in OG is willing to find ways to reduce the numbers of cars coming in.
So the best advice short of activism by the townspeople is to strategize and look for small benefits stemming from knowledge of the town, such as timing your coming and going.
But don’t succumb to being imprisoned by the glut.
People are getting increasingly frustrated trying to park their cars during the summer north of Main Avenue. They know there will be no solution such as parking permits. Thus, they are taking things into their own hands and coming up with remedies using cones, inconsiderate parking, and other ways to insure parking for themselves and their friends and families and F— the neighbors!
To Ken…. I think that this is the new mind-set when there is a general sense that things here are “not fair”. Taxes, who builds what, visitor over owner priority; the citizens of OG are not being respected.
So what do we do when we see three cones sitting in the street all day obviously saving a spot? Or when someone parks in such a manner that they take up two spots purposely to save a spot when their guest arrives? The guest arrives and they then park as they should.
Or what about the clown that puts two garbage pails in the street? What happens when I get out of my car and move these “space savers” and then an altercation happens?
No one owns the streets. Why are these “me, me, me people” allowed to get away with this?
If there’s a law against this childish behavior then why aren’t the police enforcing it? Send in the tow trucks!
How about the homeowner with a two car garage that parks in the middle of the two spaces between their curb cut and the corner? This is the new reality when Neptune and CMA refuse to give each home a designated parking space. The gloves are apparently off!
Morally handicapped!
Parking gets worse every summer, especially in the north part of town.
