Winter Haiku
By George Held
The winter sky
resumes at 6 a.m.–
black boughs on gray slate
January cold wave–
even the paving stones
are shivering
Winter’s yield
is icy cold and snow–
no birdsong till spring

Those pavers seem almost people, don’t they!
Not a sound
in day or night
Pavers hope skyward

“even the paving stones

This is a great image. I have read George Held’s poems before—-many times; he creates images that are on the edge, but he always maintains control.
A nice poem but a wonderful photo. Sorry, but poetry is not my thing. I know many intellectuals are into poetry and haiku.
If you remember my neighbor, E., his wife was a well published haiku writer.
She is still alive in the bay area and at 95 still pickets every Friday against whatever war it may be. Now there seem to be many to choose from.
She is one of only a few markedly left liberals dating back to when she was a card carrying commie. I do not know if she is involved in anything political except war.
Thanks for sending that.
Editor’s note: My old friend Dick is a card carrying yenta and a liberal with an open mind. He is a retired doctor who, when we were practicing in the same hospital, made me laugh more times than I could count. Naturally he would prefer the photo to the poem, but what does he know?
I am a winter person, and I love New York .
The poem and photo are lovely together, and of course, Frank Sinatra enhances the mood.
Wonderful 👏🏼
George Held, who lives in New York, regularly publishes poems, stories, translations, and book reviews in journals such as Blue Unicorn, Home Planet News, Transference, and American Book Review.
He has received ten Pushcart Prize nominations, including one each for poetry and for fiction in 2016. His new book, his twentieth, is Dog Hill Poems (Seattle: Goldfish Press, 2017.)
Blogfinger is proud to present Mr. Held’s poetry. “Winter Haiku” is actually a trio of related poems. He has published over 200 haiku, and it is a privilege to be the first to publish “Winter Haiku.”
