The summer after my freshman year of college I was hired as a waitress at the Saranac Inn, an old-fashioned resort hotel in the Adirondacks near Lake Placid. On my arrival I was assigned to trail a veteran waitress from the year before, to learn the ropes. I was in awe.
Only a year or two older than I, my coach was self-assured as she navigated the tables, her large oval tray balanced on one hand. She was also quite beautiful, with a dazzling smile that charmed customers. Indeed, she had been a runner-up in the Miss Florida contest, and planned to study acting in Boston.
At the summer’s-end show that the crew of college kids put on for customers, several other waitresses and I did a hula. My teacher performed a soliloquy from Shakespeare.
Her name was Faye Dunaway.

Eva Katherine :
Ocean Grove of today looks like Coney Island.
Sorry but I have no fotos from those days(70’s) . Do have great memories though as indeed it was great fun . Asbury Park in the 90’s reminded me of Coney Island in the 70’s . AP & Coney are psychically connected to me .
Frank S. That job must have been great fun. Did you get to photograph any of those Coney Island sights? If so, please send us a few of your images.
I made cotton candy at Nathans in Coney Island .
I worked at Day’s (which was then called Day’s Tea Room) as a waitress.
