It has been proposed that resident permit parking be established in Ocean Grove. The question pertains to the general idea of permit parking, which many towns already have. It is understood that the details would have to be debated later.
The HOA is proposing a referendum for November. Let’s vote now. This vote is an opinion survey for July 2017 and is not binding on your subsequent decisions related to this topic.
This poll is intended for residents of Ocean Grove. Please do not vote more than once.
There really isn’t one person on the quote, Twp. Committee, unquote, that cares enough about Ocean Grove. They respond to midtown and shark river. I feel they see Ocean Grove “as an annoying child.” Give me an example of a Twp. Committee person who takes any interest in Ocean Grove.
Joe – Excellent point.
We live on “Lake Ave” which is not even a street. I voted yes because I park on Asbury Ave whenever I can, but usually blocks south of that on weekends (occasionally even south of Broadway).
If I live in Ocean Grove, can I buy a permit to park in Asbury Park? Usually it would be much closer.
Joe: There is no precedent to require a vote every time government does something to affect our lives. To do so would paralyze local government.
Do you really want to give Neptuners veto power over what is best in Ocean Grove? You can’t have an official vote just for Grovers.
Did we vote on closing down Main Avenue for driving and parking for Chamber events? Did we vote on the recent addition of more diagonal parking on our streets? Did we vote on banning smoking in our public parks and beaches?
Did we vote on variance decisions to allow condominium conversions each time one came up before a board?
Do we vote every time a Neptune developer is allowed to ignore RSIS parking standards which are designed to protect our community?
Did we vote to allow Neptune to ignore the pollution of Wesley Lake?
And for all those towns that do have permit parking, do you think the public voted on those plans?
Joe—you can’t demand a vote only for your pet peeves. If you are to have your way, then we should plan to vote to approve everything which is decided over at the mother ship.
I voted no, and I did so because if the town is going to restrict the public’s ability to park on public roads, then the public at large should have the right to vote and approve that restriction.
The poll has been up for the usual amount of time. As noted, we have reason to suspect tampering by individuals who are voting more than once. You can still comment on the results. Throughout the poll, the “yes” votes have prevailed.
These polls are not scientific and only give an indication of opinion trends. A more accurate result would require an in-person vote organized in town….? by the HOA.
We would like to hear from more “no” voters as to why they would say no to this concept.
We have 312 votes as of July 17, but I suspect the poll is flawed due to the unexpectedly high “no” votes. It seems too high, because “no” voters haven’t put up any reasonable arguments for voting “no” as a general principal.
We will let it play out for awhile; it appears that “yes” votes will outnumber “no” votes by a 3:2 margin.
The number of votes places this poll near the top of our all time list of polls. We rarely go over 300, and this one is not complete.
The next best way to judge the opinions of Grovers on this would be to have a public vote in town—-not a referendum which would include Neptuners, making the results uninterpretable.
No? You must be kidding. The amount of taxes we pay clearly supports the right to have a parking space. Visitors are always welcome but shouldn’t have priority over residents.
As a north side, full time owner/resident, if permit parking doesn’t happen, I’m going to rent out both units of my property and move out. For the amount of taxes I pay on this little spit of land, parking 6 blocks from my home on weekends is unacceptable.
I vote no. I have adult kids and grandkids whom I do not want to discourage from visiting.
I live on the south side of town, and we can almost always get parking. It’s only a problem on the flea markets weekends and 4th of July. So, I’m just curious how much the permits will cost, before I vote for them. I know it’s very tough on the north side.
Retired : I commute from NYC to OG. I work late. Catch the 10:20 pm train from NYC which gets into AP about 12:30 am. Bridges are not locked then. Maybe that midnight closing time is loose. Could be they don’t actually lock bridges until much later.
Although bridges being open for me is a good thing, nonetheless for the sake of OG & OG parking I think they should be locked at midnight prompt or even earlier .
Frank: Neptune Police still lock the gates at midnight and open them again at 5 AM.
Retired : Gates on bridges from OG to AP used to be locked at ~ midnight . That practice stopped a few years ago . Too bad . As most/many folks who park in OG to go into AP come back after midnight this would help . Also keep loud drunks coming back from AP from disturbing the peace on North side of OG . OGHOA & OGCMA should re-consider locking up gates on these bridges at night.
I am tempted to put a lock on the gates for the bridges at Wesley Lake. That will free up a minimum of 100 spaces for those who park in Ocean Grove and walk right over to Asbury.
I’m all for giving permits a try, but why the referendum during the November election? Can’t the Township Committee make a decision on their own? Their wishy-washyness, on this and other issues, is SO FRUSTRATING.
Yankee George: There are no details available yet.
What about annual renters, not owners? Do they receive a parking permit?
The folks voting no are probably not OG residents . Might be tourists who know how hard parking is here so don’t want to lose what little is available .
Kate: I agree with you, but I know a few people who, for some reason, are against it.
If any “no” voters want to send a comment, go ahead, but let’s not quibble about details now because we don’t know the details yet.
The basic fact of permit parking is that parking spots are reserved around town for residents with permits, but no one gets their own spot.
Who has voted ‘No’ for permit parking? The people who work for the township, the OGCMA, HPC, etc? It doesn’t make any sense as to why anyone who actually lives in this town would vote ‘No’ to permit parking.
Considering its proximity to Asbury Park and its free parking enthusiasts, the “Mountains” with short, narrow one way streets, added seasonal tenter density, numerous multi family residences, extended fire zones along Asbury Ave AND no parking on Lake should all be permit only.
Editor’s note: Please do not try to discuss details now. The comment above would have been rejected except it is a good example of what is currently off limits.
Thanks Paul
