Stephen Sondheim, the most famous composer and writer of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows for the last couple of generations set out to write a musical about marriage. But he never has been married, so he got together with a close female friend who has been married twice, and he spent a day as she described the “little things” that make for a joyful marriage. He took notes and used a book by George Furth to create the 1970 Broadway hit Company.
The 1970 show is set in a New York restaurant where a group of married couples have gathered to celebrate the 35th birthday of Bobby, their only close friend who has never been married. Their goal is to convince him that marriage is a fine idea.
Here is Elaine Stritch, Barbara Barrie, George Coe and the original Broadway cast of Company with “The Little Things You Do Together:” In this scene, one of the couples is demonstrating some worrisome karate moves, and they may or may not be kidding.
