There is a 10 man maintenance team that will be involved in the unfurling of our flag this Sunday. This tradition occurs on certain holidays. The crew, which is composed of a patriotic team consisting of some immigrants, takes great pride in participating in this tradition which began after WWII. The flag flies only one day at at time, except, after 9-11, it remained aloft for 30 days.
Live report from the GW Bridge by Jean Bredin, Blogfinger staff: “I was in Fort Lee this weekend when I read the Blogfinger post about Flag Day and the George Washington Bridge. I decided to take a ride over. A walk across the Bridge is always exhilarating, but today it was especially so. The flag in all its glory was hanging high above me, billowing in the sun. The words of that old patriotic song came to mind…’She’s a grand old flag….she’s a high flying flag..and forever in peace may she wave’… Sadly, it only waved til 1:00. I spoke to one of the George Washington Bridge workers who said the Port Authority didn’t want to pay the workers overtime, so they had to furl it up……”
On Blogfinger we honor the flag by playing the US Military Academy Band and West Point Glee Club performing their “Alma Mater.”
Terrific story ma! You’re right where the action is! Very patriotic too. Nice piece of photo journalism.
What a beautiful story and great pictures. Patriotism at its best!
This is the largest free flying Flag in the world. Such a beautiful sight….Inspiring.
