It seems that an influenza epidemic may be beginning. The concern is about the H3N2 virus which is bad news and may not respond well to the current vaccine due to genetic changes (“drift”) in its characteristics. If someone contracts influenza, there are two antiviral drugs available which work best if they are given during the first 48 hours of the condition. Tamiflu is given orally, while Relenza is inhaled.
Those who are most endangered by influenza stand to benefit the most from antiviral therapy. This list includes children under age 2, seniors over 65, patients with lung, heart and other diseases, and those who are immunocompromised.
The flu vaccine can still be given and it can help reduce or prevent influenza, even if given during the flu season.
