This photograph is from an August morning in 1964. We were staying at a hotel in the south Miami Beach area when a hurricane (Cleo –a serious storm) unexpectedly hit. We slept in the hall that night.
The next morning we went out to see the damage. Many of the hotel lobbies were ruined including ours. This image was taken in the lobby of the oceanfront Deauville Hotel. The ocean-facing windows blew in and swept shattered glass and salt water all over the place.
Returning to NYC, I submitted the photograph to a contest at The Mt. Sinai Hospital where it was selected to be on exhibit indefinitely. The best part was that the hospital arranged to have a large exhibition print professionally made. This image has never before been published.
