PLEASE PLACE YOUR SUNDAY COMMENTS HERE. Thank you ladies and germs — the management.
Sunday evacuated to the Sheraton Hotel in Eatontown. Within two hours of our stay, they lost power. No hot water for showers; limited food supply, it didn’t make sense to stay at $89 per night plus the food bill. So on Tuesday morning we ventured home to see, what, if anything, happened to our home on Embury Avenue. We were lucky compaired to our neighbors. Minimal roof damage. We tried to stay home that day and turn on our fireplace only to experience horrible headaches from the gas fumes. We were told by the fire dept to shut down the fireplace, open the windows and get out of the house, which we did.
Upon going back inside, we figured we’d wait it out in the dark, since we still had hot water and could cook on our stove. I mean, how long could the power be out for? That was our thinking for the next five days, until we couldn’t stand it anymore.
My son who lives with us went out to my nieces in Rocky Point, Long Island, and my husband and I went into Atlantic City, washed our clothes in a laundrymatte there and stayed over night. Again we figured, the power has to be back on tomorrow.
The next day, more of the same. Frustrated and upset, we ventured home, with clean clothes and a full tank of gas. Harrah’s casino gave us towels and soap and shampoo to take along. Last night we stayed at my daughter’s on Clark Avenue, since her power has been restored, and again we said, “Oh, probably we’ll have power tomorrow.” Here we are, still no power onthe first two beach blocks of Embury Avenue. What’s the problem? No one, even the Mayor’s office doesn’t know.
So back to the drawing board, I got in touch with FEMA today. We’ve been displaced a week and two days. We don’t want anything we are not entitled to. All we want to do is go home!
Evacuated last Sunday to Mountainside and spent the entire week with no power, no internet, no TV, even for a time no water. Was kept informed of the situation in Ocean Grove by phone from daughter in Chicago who passed along all the info on Blogfinger. God bless Blogfinger and crew for the spectacular coverage. Got back late today to find house intact and that basement flooding had solved itself.
Two items illustrate Jersey storm disaster attitude. On Saturday before the storm I spotted a lady exiting jam-packed Shoprite with last minute purchase: one extra large bottle of Vodka and two XL size bottles of Johnny Walker Red Label….missed that party. Friday my son spotted a sign in front of a private house that read: Free coffee and charging outlets available inside, come in.
Found on Clark Ave. Beautiful long haired white cat with pink collar. Contact Ed. Eedward819@Aol.com
I live at La Pierre and some of us have sporadic power in different outlets and not in others, while others have no power at all. We still have no heat.
I think you need to put your blogfinger banner out again. I directed several people to the site who never heard of it and/or heard of it and never went there. They are missing out…
Does anyone have any insight as to why the fallen tree (across the power lines) on the corner of Webb and Beach has not been addressed? I can only think this has something to do with power not being restored in our section of OG…JCP&L has no answers.
For people looking for reputable and recommended contractors, I suggest Angies List http://www.angieslist.com – I have found amazing people through the list. And of course check anyone through the Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org. Your insurance carrier may also have recommendations as well (when we had damage from frozen pipes, that is how we found our contractor).
RJ Your house looks fine. The big tree next to it came down by the roots, but fell toward Embury. The only damage is a little bit to the retaining wall where the tree was.
I just want to thank you so much for your blog. My husband and I live in Georgia and our daughter and her fiancé’ live in Ocean Grove . Thru your blog we are able to keep abreast of everything that is going on and feel closer to them when we are not intouch. We had the good fortune to participate in the 4th of July parade this year. Our daughter Heather runs the kazoo band and I was the “kazoo band queen”. It was a wonderful day we fell in love with the town and all the friendly people. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those effected by this tragic storm. Thank you again and may God Bless You.
Once again, Paul, thank you so much for this service and your conscientiousness..
Just got back into town and no power on Webb! (First two beach blocks are out.)
I am no longer getting alert notices in my email account that Blogfinger has something new to read. This has been for about three weeks.
Could that be from your side–or mine?
Jane
EDITOR’S NOTE: Hi Jane:
We were too busy to send out our usual emails with the links that some of you depend on.
Actually, because of the power outage, we had no kilobytes to spare. But now, we will be doing mailings again.
For those of you who can’t get on the blog without the link, just open your browser and type on the URL line (web address line) on top: Blogfinger.net
Paul @Blogfinger
I don’t know about that specifically, but I know that sometimes they turn the power on only to find some problem area which had been missed. So they turn off the grid in order to repair the issue. This time sequence suggests that this might be the explanation
First, may I say that you guys are doing a wonderful job for those of us not yet lucky enough to live in OG full time.
As a part time weekend and summer resident in the South End my house was unfortunately flooded. Since I didn’t have flood insurance and found out yesterday that FEMA doesn’t offer help to those of us whose OG homes are not their primary residence, I thought it might be helpful to develop of list of REPUTABLE/FAIR contractors, handymen,et.al. that Grovers have used successfully and won’t gouge us who are not full time residents. As it is now, any repairs that I make to my home will have to come out of my retirement savings which is very low at this point. Fortunately, my house is only 700 square feet and unlike other really unfortunate people, mine is still standing.
What might also be helpful is a separate area on the blog for people who have dealt with flooding before regarding things to watch out for…i.e.,I’m terrified of mold, would my refrigerator, washer, stove be salvageable? Maybe they might be able to suggest things to watch out for and we can learn from other people’s mistakes.
Thanks again for being there for us!
EDITOR’S NOTE: We don’t intend to promote contractors here because we are in no position to evaluate such recommendations. We will not post comments that include contractor recommendations.
Some readers may offer suggestions about storm related problems such as a freezer that got flooded, etc. They can do that by making comments on the blog. PG
Paul, I was glad to meet you (live) today. What a great experience. We’re so grateful for all that you and your team are doing to cover this event.
If you’re interested in another “good guy” story, you might consider Al Komjathy, a summer resident and Trenton lobbyist who used his connections with Waste Management to get 3-4 dumpsters delivered for the cleanup today. No small feat.
Thanks for you’re consideration. Keep up the good work.
Best, Doug
Hi Paul,
The coverage during the storm was amazing and very comforting for me while I was in San Diego this week. I am also very lucky to have great neighbors who looked after my house and battened down my fence when it went flying.
I have a bit of a following on Google + and folks from around the country are very interested in what’s been going on here on the shore. I would like to post some of the pictures from your blog and give full attribution and the link. Are you ok with that? I will not repost your pictures without permission. Thanks for all you do for our town,
Carol
Editor’s note: Thanks Carol. You may post the photos, but please say that they are copy written and may not be used without our permission. Thanks, Paul
Greetings!
I’m a resident of OG on the beach block of Heck Ave and just want to thank you for your public service! Because of your site I knew about the town meeting and clean up — and I am so grateful for the opportunity to return the gentle care and reassurance this beloved beach and boardwalk give to me on a daily basis.
Most of all — thank you for the INFORMATION! Along with other resources, actual (and accurate) information was very hard to come by during and after the storm. The live updates via reader comments kept us very well connected and helped us stay calm when we were literally and figuratively in the dark. Keep it coming!
Finally — if there is anything this reader can do to help YOU, please let me know!
Grace
I want to thank you for being so on top of everything even with limited resources, just wondering why the power shut back off last night around 1:00 AM? If you can post any new info that’d be great!
Discovering your blog has made my day. OG is one of my favorite places on earth. Thank you for your news postings about the storm.
I am a resident of New York City, in midtown west, affected by the storm in a different way than you all certainly but I really appreciate the photos video and reporting on a place I love and hold dearly.
Grateful to you for your posts and your uplifting tone. We have been coming to Ocean Grove for about 25 years. This has always been a place of renewal and healing for us and now we want return the favor. My husband, 8 yr old daughter and I of town this week, but we would like to volunteer our time next Sunday (coming from Cherry Hill). Will there be other chances to help? We can distribute food or help clean the beach (hopefully Wed will be easy on the Grove). Please let me know and may God Bless you & all the residents of Ocean Grove!

I live at 101 embury. Havnt been back and was hoping if some one could let me know if my house is OK. Thank you!
Finally connected with our neighbors on Surf Ave. All is going as well as can be expected, No real damage. Their teamwork for keeping food cold (one cooler in one house) pooled dinners together in the biggest dining room (sound like banquets) etc. and the caring for one another is what makes the OG community so special. Thanks again to the Blogfinger “bunch” for all their continued effort in keeping all of us up to date.
