The original opening of Porgy and Bess was in 1935. It was written by George (music) and Ira (lyrics) Gershwin, along with DuBose Heyward (libretto.)
This latest reincarnation is currently at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on West 46th St. Audra McDonald won “best lead actress in a musical,” and the show won “best musical revival.” One of the most emotional moments in the show is when she performs “I Loves You Porgy.” —PG
This is Audra McDonald with Norm Lewis :
It is great and respectful for you to change your text, but unfortunately, the marquis is selling the show as “The Gershwins”…oh well…
You are correct about the credits. Dubose Heyward wrote the libretto as well as the book and play that preceded the musical. I have changed our title and text. Paul
Love the music/show. But to paraphrase Stephen Sondheim’s letter to the editor of the NY Times, it is shameful to call this “The Gershwins Porgy and Bess.” What about Dubose Heyward? And, to fiddle with the story is just obscene. The script was tweaked. Shameful. Show more respect towards the writers/composers, and give the audience more credit!
That being said, the music, and the artists are amazing!
I enjoyed the show. I was amazed at Porgy the way he could move!! I saw it in May through HSOG bus trips that leave from Fireman’s Park and take you to the show!! You have time for dinner then get picked a block from theater and come home abt 12 ish. In the Fall our trip is Nice Work if You can Get It!
