OG Neighborhood Watch: A Boardwalk Robbery

August 6, 2012 by Blogfinger

Police are investigating a recent early morning robbery at the North End area of the boardwalk.

According to the latest Neighborhood Watch report, three Hispanic males stole the victim’s cell phone and some money and ran away toward Asbury Park.

In other recent incidents:

  • Someone entered an unlocked car in the area of Spray Avenue and Ocean Avenue, but apparently nothing was taken.
  • A locked bicycle was stolen from the area of 140 Mt. Tabor Way.
  • An unlocked bike was stolen near 20 Spray Avenue.
  • Two unattended bags were stolen from the beach.
  • Police received a report of criminal mischief to a residence in the area of 40 Benson Avenue.

Neptune Police urge us all to keep our personal items secure and to watch for suspicious activity. Report anything suspicious by calling 9-1-1.

Police just said “during the early morning hours.”

It would be helpful if they had some security cameras on the Boardwalk, especially one that captures who is coming/going to AP. I have some outside my house in the Grove and they really don’t cost much.

Also: a week ago people in a small SUV toppled over the porta john at a construction site on Abbott Ave., (near Pilgrim Pathway) resulting in minor fender damage to the car parked adjacent. A police report was filed.

Jason: Please enlighten us. How would security cameras on the boardwalk “capturing” everyone coming/going to AP be helpful? Probably a couple of thousand folks go to & from AP each day. How would you possibly know which one committed a crime? Who would monitor these (plural) cameras to catch a crime in process? Even if a victim upon reviewing camera footage was able to ID a criminal, how would they then be apprehended? IMHO security cameras are not very useful and give a false sense of security. Actually and ironically they give a sense of insecurity & paranoia.

cameras…are a widely accepted tool used by law enforcement …cameras are also a determent….bring on the cameras

One could argue that security cameras serve as a deterrent.

As reported, the criminals after the robbery went via the boardwalk back to AP. Since we know the time of the robbery, the individual robbed knows what the criminals looked like, and we know that that they were three Hispanic males, we could simply look at the DVR recorder at the time of the robbery for three Hispanic males coming from OG who are identified by the victim (eyewitness) as the robbers.

Since the crime happened early in the morning, they should be very easy to spot. You then print out copies of photographs of the criminal’s faces and give them to the police detectives. I’m sure they could be found if they are from AP/Neptune.

Video from cameras would never be reviewed in real time. Only if there is a reason to review it. The fact that they (the cameras) are always there, watching, would also discourage criminals from pulling stuff like this in the first place.

    jw..thank you for the correction

Jason : You really expect the police to stop all hispanic males in our area to see if they match DVR recording ? That would that be morally wrong. It also would invite a huge liability/profiling case against AP/Neptune.

Security cameras do not necessarily deter crime. There is plenty of proof to the contrary.

Again I say they give a false sense of security as you say they would not be being watched in real time while a crime was happening. So a victim of a crime in process would not be helped or saved.

IMHO seeing security cameras in an area makes me think I am in a “bad” area and makes me feel insecure and a bit paranoid.
